Primary votes were 39% Labor (steady), 36% Coalition (down one), 9% Greens (steady) and 7% One Nation (up two).<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1414743802\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1415321734\">This Newspoll is the Coalition\u2019s 50th successive Newspoll loss. The closest they have come to breaking that losing streak was a run of four consecutive 51-49 results from July to early August 2018 before Malcolm Turnbull was dumped. This Newspoll reverses the gains the Coalition had made to close the gap to 53-47 from 55-45 in November and December.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1662585747\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1189446384\">Despite the Coalition\u2019s woes on voting intentions, Scott Morrison remains relatively popular. 43% were satisfied with his performance (up one), and 45% were dissatisfied (down three), for a net approval of -2. Bill Shorten\u2019s net approval was up three points to -15. Morrison led Shorten as better PM by 43-36 (44-35 last fortnight).<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1699555961\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1112832223\">I believe Morrison\u2019s relative popularity is because he has not yet proposed something that would make him unpopular, in the way Tony Abbott did with the\u00a0<span id=\"1097803678\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1725853132\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/labor-leaps-further-ahead-in-post-budget-polls-26853\">May 2014 budget<\/a>\u00a0, and his\u00a0<span id=\"1173820912\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1419790137\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/abbotts-ratings-slump-following-knightmare-affair-36840\">January 2015 knighting<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1546326362\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0of Prince Philip. Turnbull was very unpopular with the hard right, and their hatred of him damaged his overall ratings.\u00a0<span id=\"1916651822\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><div id=\"1953748990\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1206196974\">During the election campaign, Labor will attempt to tie Morrison to unpopular Coalition policies, and this could impact his ratings.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1778363403\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1629264667\">The last fortnight has not been good for the Coalition with the retirements of\u00a0<span id=\"1489328293\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1021806469\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2019\/mar\/01\/christopher-pyne-and-steve-ciobo-expected-to-quit-parliament\">Christopher Pyne and Steve Ciobo<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0<span id=\"1113341797\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1039600584\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-11\/barnaby-joyce-nationals-deputy-prime-minister-carbon-emissions\/10888668\">infighting<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1479660641\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0within the Nationals, and\u00a0<span id=\"1791458464\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1235305905\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-08\/malcolm-turnbull-tells-bbc-their-concern-was-that-i-would-win\/10881492\">Turnbull<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1735698341\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span id=\"1507849557\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1708743469\" href=\"https:\/\/thewest.com.au\/politics\/federal-politics\/julie-bishop-i-was-liberals-best-bet-to-beat-bill-shorten-in-federal-election-ng-b881123326z\">Julie Bishop<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1484815259\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0saying they could have beaten Shorten if they were the leader.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1337298911\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1369777141\">While these events may have had an impact, I believe the Coalition\u2019s biggest problem is weak economic data. On March 6, the ABS reported that\u00a0<span id=\"1702905538\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1231786716\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/ausstats\/abs@.nsf\/mf\/5206.0?opendocument&amp;ref=HPKI\">Australia\u2019s GDP<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1310611117\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0grew 0.2% in the December quarter after the September quarter GDP was up 0.3%. In per capita terms, GDP growth was negative in both the September and December quarters, meaning Australia has had its\u00a0<span id=\"1259124275\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1774155930\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-06\/gdp-q4-2018\/10874592\">first per capita GDP recession<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1011899393\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0since 2006.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"1368210338\" class=\"dmNewParagraph\"><p id=\"1133619682\">In the December quarter, wages grew by 0.5%, matching the rate of inflation in that quarter. The Coalition already has a problem with well-educated voters owing to their perceived lack of climate change policies and the removal of Turnbull \u2013 see my\u00a0<span id=\"1422640194\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<a id=\"1004292729\" href=\"http:\/\/adrianbeaumont.net\/reachtel-50-50-tie-in-wentworth-and-where-morrison-could-have-problems\/\">personal website<\/a>\u00a0<span id=\"1420052031\" class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0for where I thought Morrison could have problems.
